An Invitation to Explore the Role of Knowledge in society

Articles discussing the Knowledge Commons Summit

Yesterday I wrote a short article about some of my thoughts post Knowledge Commons Summit. Here is the link:

Please continue the discussion. This is an important but complex issue that requires many minds and many perspectives to allow something resilient and sustainable to emerge.

There is also a comment by Michael Johnny on the ResearchImpact blog:

I suggested that in my commentary/article - there are many vibrant open communities that already exist - adapt and use what is already there. My experience is the "special" needs syndrome. I have worked with 134 different client groups in the last 3.5 years - most of the issues are similar but with access and training that needs customization. We need managers and facilitators - but this is not sexy work, and most of the time quite boring. But so are many jobs that create long term value.

Ah, follow the money (-:
I understand completetly the digital immigrant piece. As I listened to the conversation today, I found myself wondering if in our desire for connection we don`t sometimes exhaust ourselves in trying to create it rather than letting it happen organically as an outgrowth of our activity.

Part of the challenge is culture - most of the people participating here are digital immigrants (per Don Tapscott's term). I think it is a combination of overworked in day jobs, fear of writing something that may be regretted, cultural orientation of people over 30 years old, and perhaps interest in other things. The most comments I ever had on an article related to funding - clear motivation and desire. Just my 2 cents.

Ok- so I note most of the posts have few comments which is very common with discussion boards. What is the 'essential ingredient' that gets a real conversation going in spaces like this?

Great article Peter. It is good food for thought in terms of thinking of ways (and reasons) to keep this conversation going.
