Knowledge Commons Initiative

An Invitation to Explore the Role of Knowledge in society

National Summit Report

Citizens, Scholars, and Policy Makers Call for New Approaches to Using Knowledge to Meet Societal Needs
The Canadian Knowledge Commons Initiative National Summit of June 2, 2010 held at the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM) brought together a diverse group of about 80 people who share a deep interest in the creation and uses of knowledge for accelerating the pace of positive change in our communities.

Those already involved with the Canadian Knowledge Commons Initiative share a common interest in breaking down the barriers between communities and universities, breaking down the knowledge silos of the disciplines and the creation of new knowledge partnerships between community, policy makers, the private sector and academics.

Partners & Sponsors
Community-Based Research Canada, the Canadian Alliance for Community Service-Learning, Community-Campus Partnerships for Health and the Social Innovation Generation at the University of Waterloo formed the core-organizing group which launched the Canadian Knowledge Commons Initiative in October 2009. Additional initial support for this initiative has come from the University of Guelph, the Office of Community Based Research (University of Victoria), the Centre for Community Based Research (Kitchener), Research Impact (York University) and the Wellesley Institute (Toronto). Other sponsors for the June 2nd Summit event include the Canadian Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences and the International Development Research Centre.
