Knowledge for What ? The original idea for Community Based Research Canada and the Global Alliance for Community Engaged Research involved values for human betterment. Thats why I was a signatory on behalf of a civil society organization. This initiative looks like a smorgasbord for whatever people want to use it for to make money for their own research interests, particularly academics.
In my opinion the best "knowledge commons" are being created by civil society movements locally, nationally and globally for action to create better social, economic, environmental conditions, and in some cases (e.g. Brazil) some universities are partners. Canada's universities are a source of resistance to this kind of democratic change...the point is how do we (if its worth trying) make them more supportive.
Thanks Rupert...a good reminder to all on the way some of this can appear. I hope that you will be able to participate on June 2. We scheduled it to follow the Summit on the People's Economy and have been working the CEDNET to get the word out to their networks.
The opening panel has 1 academic, 1 civil society leader, 1 student, 1 local level civil servant and 1 research granting council leader.
The two context areas are: Social Economy-Quebec experience with Nancy Neamtem, a civil society leader and the Challenge to recover and revitalize Indigenous Languages and Culture with Lorna Williams, a nationally respect Indigenous scholar. The Grand Chief of the AFN has been invited as well.
