Pittsburgh Community Art project - Opening Reception/block party

Hello Ning community,
I've been teaching some community art workshops in Wilkinsburg, PA this summer. The neighbors who attended the workshops designed and painted large pieces of plywood to be used to board up ten abandoned buildings on Whitney Avenue. We began our work with the theme "houses in waiting".

These artworks grew from our collective experience drawing, writing, and collecting in response to the abandoned properties. The paintings you see on these now boarded-up houses reflect collective, community authorship. Neighbors began gardening and tending the lots, reclaiming the shared neighborhood space.
