Event Description

This event will begin with a half hour, informal meet and greet, followed by a short presentation about the Knowledge Commons initiative, a reminder of what we mean by 'a knowledge commons' etc, and then a chance to move into open space and small groups for conversation and inspiration about new ways to think about 'knowledge' and to work together to integrate new knowledge into social action - a terrific warm-up to CUExpo!

SiG@Waterloo is coordinating the gathering and sharing of some updates on related action that were discussed last June at the Knowledge Commons Summit in Montreal - stay tuned for information and links to these updates

Hi Todd,

Sorry for my delayed response, but these are some very stimulating questions. The KC discussion was indeed thought provoking, and I am glad you enjoyed the event. We are hoping to move towards answering some of these kinds of questions. I wonder if there are any ideas on how we can move forward? Considering the tremendous progress we have made with an exciting group of people. I am wonder where do we go from here?

I attended the KC discussion this afternoon and the community service-learning symposium hosted by the Canadian Alliance for Community Service-Learning earlier in the day - very thought provoking as usual. What is knowledge? Who owns it? Who uses it? How is it produced? Are certain forms of knowledge valued over others? Perhaps it is a question of power-over vs. power-with? Knowledge is everywhere, like education, like learning, like development...but for what purposes? To what ends? Power-over or power-with? Knowledge production and knowledge use looks different depending on your goal. What if we focused on knowledge for "power-with" empowerment...the democratization of knowledge? What's the purpose of knowledge? What's your purpose for knowledge? Why learn? Why education? The end of education? Why develop? Why organize? For community outcomes? Student outcomes? Individual outcomes? Who is involved? Who is not involved?

Sorry I can't make the meeting - we have a CCPH board meeting at the same time!   I hope to see everyone at CU Expo.  For the latest info on "Rewarding Community-Engaged Scholarship: Towards the Transformation of University Policies & Practices," visit our website at http://cescholarship.ca and come to our workshop on May 11 from 2-3:30 pm in BA113: "Recognizing & rewarding community-engaged scholarship: implications for faculty development, tenure, and promotion"
